Lake Baikal in Russia is huge. In fact, as far as volume is concerned, it’s the biggest lake in the world. It holds 20 percent of all the unfrozen fresh surface water on earth.

For today’s purposes, you don’t need to do any homework. Today, I came across a bunch of pictures of cars stuck in Lake Baikal and it both amused and moved me, so I’m passing them on to you. Apparently, when Baikal freezes over, people enjoy a spot of ice fishing.
Because this is Russia, folk simply drive their cars onto the ice, drop their baits through a hole, and try their luck. Sometimes, however, the ice is not thick enough to hold the weight of a car, at least not for the duration of a drunken fishing adventure.
Each year, the police publish photos of cars stuck in the ice in the hope that it will put people off. Apparently, it doesn’t work.
Although it’s kind of funny, it’s also slightly tragic. Lake Baikal has (or at least had) some of the purest water on the planet.
