USSR Counterculture in the 1970s

In 1970s USSR it was not a great idea to stand out from the crowd. Fitting in was the safest bet; but, like kids in all cultures, the USSR youth liked to dress up and cause a stink.

Below are some moody shots from 70s countercultures in the USSR. The older generation referred to them all as “punks” but there are plenty more styles at work here – rockers, metal heads, bikers, hippies; all of that jazz.

These new styles started emerging around the end of the 70s. Buying imported clothes was prohibitively expensive at that time, so there’s a strong home-made ethic, which suits punk well, of course. Enjoy:
