Brighton Pride 2016: The Aftermath

Brighton’s first Pride event took place in 1972, it was, at that time, a gay rights demonstration. Since then, many battles have been won, and Pride is now a huge celebration. This year, the event was attended by an estimated 300,000 people, bringing more than £13 million into the local economy.

I don’t particularly like crowds of people, house music or happiness, so I didn’t attend this year. Instead, I decided to get up early the next day and survey the carnage.

Pride this year was blessed with wonderfully clement weather during the festivities, but by 6 am this morning when I rolled out of bed, it was decidedly more bleak outside.

The grey skies and imposing i360 gave Brighton seafront a post-apocalyptic feel… actually, it felt more like the apocalypse hadn’t quite started yet, and was due to kick off at about 8:30, once the caffeine had kicked in.

The weather, unfortunately, meant there were substantially fewer people around than I had hoped for. That means that the photos are a little disappointing; but, seeing as I got up at 6 am on a miserable Sunday morning, I’m posting them anyway.
