The Submersive Art Of Yang Yongliang
Yang Yongliang, born 1980 in Jiading, Shanghai is an awe-inspiring contemporary artist. His early training was steeped in classical Chinese techniques which becomes apparent when you look at his work. But Yongliang is clearly passionate about bringing some new to the old. And he does so rather deftly I think you’ll agree.
Anyone who’s a regular around here knows I’m not exactly erudite when it comes to art, but I think this quote from the Limn Gallery puts it better than I could have managed:
(Yongliang) perfectly handles the contradictions between ephemeral and solid, vigor and gentle, sparse and bold, beauty and ugly so as to make the entire picture poetically harmonious, but the details are ‘blots on the landscape’. He successfully achieves a perfect balance between fragility and danger, beauty and cruelty.
Despite using Photoshop and other new fangled technique, Yongliang is dedicated to keeping the spirit and practice of ancient Chinese art alive:
