Haley Morris-Cafiero‘s Wait Watchers are a series of photos designed to punch a hole in those punching holes. She turns the attention away from the stairee and places it back on the starer.
A few years ago Morris-Cafiero took a photo of herself in Times Square, when she looked at the image later she noticed a guy stood just behind her in the image was sneering at her. This inspired her to create the Wait Watchers project.
Haley sets up a still camera and takes hundreds of photographs of herself doing mundane tasks; she catches the expressions and pointed stares of the strangers around her. They’re funny in a way, but also a little bit sad. I guess we’re all a bit meaner than we pretend we are. In fact I think we’re probably meaner than we even know we are.
