Dagestan, if you were wondering, is a republic of Russia located in the North Caucasus region. Its capital and largest city is Makhachkala, in the center of Dagestan on the Caspian Sea. I put up some images taken at a Dagestani wedding not that long ago and just now I stumbled across these photos of Dagestan taken in 1933.
Dagestan is the most ethnically diverse area of Russia with no majority culture. There’s over 2 million people living there and only 3.6% are ethnic Russians. It’s an interesting, if slightly troubled region. The summers are hot and dry and the winter’s cruel, it’s not a place for the faint-hearted. I guess that’s why these fellas and lasses look so rough and tough.
I’m a sucker for the outskirts of mighty Russia and I love an old photo or two, so these really floated my boat…
