Gwanggyo Power Centre Is Going To Look Incredible
A Dutch architectural company called MVRDV won a competition to design Gwanggyo “Power Centre”, a brand new town in South Korea. It looks like it’s going to be a mighty impressive place to live if it comes out anywhere near as dramatic as the artist’s concepts.
Located 35km from Seoul, this twin-centred town will house 77,000 occupants. The design includes, schools, offices, leisure and all the other things you’d expect in a new town.
The splayed towers and luscious greenery ensure that everyone using any part of the city has their own snippet of outdoor life. The box hedges on terraces and roofs are pretty to look at of course, but will also help reduce water and energy usage, although I’m not sure how. I think the hedges are supposed to act as shade in favour of aircon or something.
The project is planned to begin in 2011… wait… when? Oh… it’s all gone quiet. Maybe this emerald city will never come to fruition after all? It’s very similar to Milan’s Vertical Forest in its design and ethos, and that really is being constructed. So let’s just wait and visit that instead, the air fare’s a lot cheaper too.
