PHOTOS: The Dolphin Hunters of Krasnodar

The following photographs were taken in 1946; they document the lives of the dolphin hunters of Krasnodar, Russia. They make uncomfortable viewing for our modern sensibilities, but they’re striking nonetheless.

After WWII there was widespread food shortages in Russia, especially in more rural locations.

People were hungry and dolphins became a vital source of calories. Killing dolphins is certainly frowned upon these days, but when you’re hungry, meat is meat:
