In the various battles between animals that we’ve seen here, a vibrant sea bird pitted against a pretty much stagnant blob of jelly should be an easy call. But how about a static blob of neon against a dead, baby sea bird?
It’s a pretty surprising image isn’t it? The baby cormorant probably wasn’t caught by the sea anemone, but it’s certainly being eaten by it.
Apparently it’s not unheard of for this to happen either; maybe a predator drops the bird or it dives into water too shallow and breaks its neck. The oceans are a cut throat world and if you’re stuck on the bottom and peckish, you’ll take whatever snack comes your way.
This isn’t an isolated occurrence, apparently a paper in the journal Marine Ornithology has been published on the matter, I must admit I haven’t read it though.
Here’s a video of an anemone eating a common murre:
weird.
