There’s nothing poultry about this reaction to the low price of eggs. Enraged farmers smashed 10,000 eggs near Cotes d’Armor, Brittany, on Tuesday night, then another 100,000 eggs outside a tax office in the town of Carhaiz.
The farmers have threatened to keep smashing the eggs, 10,000 every day unless something changes. They’re not even yolking.
They are royally jazzed off by a new EU directive that has put up the price of producing eggs but not increased their value. So they will continue their eggy tirade until Sunday when things will get “more radical” which sounds worrying. The new EU regulation that got their goats regarded the sizes of the cages the chickens should be kept in, this increase in cage size is bankrupting some farmers. The chickens are probably pretty chuffed though.
Poultry farmers currently get 63 pence per kilo of eggs, but the new cage size means they cost 80 pence per kilo to produce, according to the head of the egg section of the Brittany dairy farmers union.
There’s no clear cut solution with politics of course. If there were simple solutions we wouldn’t need politics in the first place.
